  • C41 vs ECN-2: Surprising Similarity in Results for Kodak Vision3 250D Film

C41 vs ECN-2: Surprising Similarity in Results for Kodak Vision3 250D Film

Using analog photography for most of my Street Photography has been my preference, with a digital camera being my backup choice only during rainy weather. Typically, I favor black and white film, but this summer, I felt a strong urge to capture the vibrant colors of the season with color film. As I looked to buy color film, I noticed that the prices had significantly increased compared to when I started shooting film four years ago. The cost of around £12 for a single roll of 35mm color film was disheartening.

    Kodak Vision

However, a turning point came when I stumbled upon a valuable piece of information while reading ‘Old School Photography’ by Kai Wong. The book revealed that Cinestill 800T was essentially Kodak Vision3 500T film, a motion picture film with its ramjet layer removed. Eager to explore this further, I searched online and found that in the UK, individuals were respooling this film from bulk rolls and selling 36-exposure 35mm cassettes for about £7. This revelation was exciting because it meant I could shoot color film at a cost comparable to black and white.

But there was a slight complication. Kodak Vision3 film requires the ECN-2 development process, different from the standard C41 process. The ECN-2 process was less common, resulting in higher development costs and longer turnaround times. Additionally, the film had a ramjet layer that needed removal for it to be developed using C41, a process known as cross-processing.

Curious about the differences between developing Kodak Vision3 film using ECN-2 and C41, I experimented. I purchased two rolls of Kodak Vision3 250D film and loaded one in each of my Pentax MX cameras with the same lens. I captured the same scene in London using the same settings for exposure. The objective was to have a direct comparison between the two processes. The challenge was to develop the film using C41 without the ramjet layer and see how it compared to the ECN-2 results.

After experimenting, I sent one roll to a lab for ECN-2 development and developed the other roll myself at home using the C41 process after removing the ramjet layer. The results were enlightening. The photos developed using C41 were slightly yellowish compared to the ECN-2-developed ones. They also appeared more contrasty with some loss of details in highlights. However, the results were surprisingly similar after making minor color corrections while scanning the C41-developed negatives. The color correction shifted the yellow hue towards magenta, making the photos less warm and matching the ECN-2 results closely.

Vaonis Hestia Transforms Your Smartphone into a Powerful Telescope!

Using a smartphone camera to capture pictures of the stars is a bit like trying to cross the ocean in a small boat – you’ll make some progress, but soon you’ll realize the limitations of your equipment. However, imagine placing your boat in a large swimming pool on a cruise ship – that’s similar to the idea behind the Vaonis Hestia which starts at 249 USD.

    smartphone camera

The Hestia, which is about the size and weight of a big hardcover book, offers an impressive 25x magnification. It achieves this by guiding light through a series of lenses and prisms, directly into your phone’s camera sensor. With the help of an augmented-reality app, you can find constellations, galaxies, nebulas, or any other celestial objects you want to photograph. The app uses a light-based guide to assist you in aiming, then it captures multiple images and blends them into a single photo using its clever processing method.

You’ll need a relatively new phone with better cameras to capture these’re deep sky’ subjects. Even older phones will be able to capture the moon more effectively than before. You can also use the Hestia to photograph the sun. Thanks to its removable magnets, it might even work with your future phone during the next total solar eclipse in 2090. By then, who knows, we might be living among the stars.

Vaonis has already introduced several smart telescopes, but they turned to Kickstarter to fund the development of the Hestia. Their goal was to raise $10,000, but they exceeded expectations and collected over $4.1 million. The Kickstarter campaign recently ended, and Vaonis plans to begin shipping the Hestia in December.

  • Samsung’s Future Camera Innovations: Exploring 440MP Sensor

Samsung’s Future Camera Innovations: Exploring 440MP Sensor

Samsung, a renowned tech giant, has been pushing the boundaries of smartphone camera technology with its impressive lineup of Galaxy devices. The latest addition, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, boasts a groundbreaking 200MP camera sensor. However, reports are now swirling about Samsung’s plans for the year 2024, hinting at even more remarkable camera innovations, including a colossal 440MP sensor.

    Samsung

According to an insider known as Revegnus, Samsung is currently in the process of mass-producing three new camera sensors. These sensors include a 50MP GN6 sensor with a pixel size of 1.6μm, a 200MP HP7 sensor with a pixel size of 0.6μm, and the most astonishing of the trio, a 440MP HU1 sensor, although its pixel size remains unconfirmed. These sensors are expected to enter mass production during the latter half of 2024. However, it’s worth noting that these cutting-edge sensors might not immediately find their way into Samsung’s own devices.

The newly introduced 50MP ISOCELL GN6 sensor could potentially succeed the ISOCELL GN1 and ISOCELL GN2 camera sensors. With its spacious 1.6μm pixel size, this sensor offers an upgrade over the ISOCELL GN2’s 1.4μm pixel size. This larger pixel size is pivotal in capturing more light, resulting in improved image quality, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Although it seems like a perfect match for Samsung’s flagship smartphones, the insider Revegnus suggests that the GN6 sensor might find its home in devices crafted by Chinese manufacturers instead.

On another note, the 200MP HP7 sensor initially had plans to feature in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Unfortunately, this remarkable sensor was eventually left out due to its high production cost. Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon, as Revegnus hints at a forthcoming 320MP sensor currently under development. This suggests that Samsung might be considering implementing the 320MP sensor in future devices, perhaps even in the anticipated Galaxy S26 Ultra.

An interesting aspect to consider is the chipset compatibility for these high-MP sensors. The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset has already shown support for 320MP cameras, while upcoming Snapdragon chips might follow suit. This paves the way for a potential revolution in smartphone camera capabilities, with 320MP sensors potentially becoming the next big trend after the 200MP sensors we’re currently witnessing.

While these camera sensors present exciting possibilities, it’s important to remember that not all innovations immediately make their way into consumer devices. Factors like production costs, compatibility, and market demand significantly determine which technologies eventually become mainstream. Regardless, Samsung’s commitment to pushing the envelope in smartphone photography continues to shape the future of mobile imaging.

  • iPhone 15 Series Leaks: USB-C Ports, Bezel Thinning, and Potential Upgrades

iPhone 15 Series Leaks: USB-C Ports, Bezel Thinning, and Potential Upgrades

New leaks about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series have provided insights into multiple updates, including USB-C ports, thinner bezels, and potential surprise upgrades for older iPhone generations.

    Apple iPhone

Leaked images reveal Apple’s alleged USB-C component for the iPhone 15 range. While sources are new, insiders consider the details to match up accurately, suggesting this change is legitimate.

The move to USB-C is significant for iPhone users. It not only complies with impending international regulations but also offers practical benefits. Users will be able to use a single cable to charge their iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. Furthermore, both iPhone and Android owners can share cables, promoting convenience.

Importantly, USB-C adoption opens doors for faster data transfer and charging speeds. iPhones have lagged behind Android counterparts in this regard, but leaks suggest that iPhone 15 Pro models might support Thunderbolt 4 performance, a significant boost from current USB 2.0 speeds. This paves the way for improved speeds, enhancing user experience.

Insider Majin Bu has shared details about upcoming screen protectors for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These protectors highlight remarkably thin bezels, measuring just 1.5mm thick. This achievement breaks records, surpassing competitors like the Xiaomi 13 (1.81mm) and the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro bezels by around 20% and 30%, respectively. This engineering feat enhances aesthetics and sets the stage for larger displays in future iPhone models.

Apple’s tvOS 17 beta code contains references to iPhone 15, iPhone 14, and their respective variants (Pro, Pro Max). While version numbers correspond to chip generations rather than model numbers, this code hints at upcoming releases.

The move to refresh iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models a year after launch raises questions. One plausible explanation is Apple’s intent to equip them with USB-C ports to comply with future sales bans. This change would bring uniformity across Pro-branded products and enhance the user experience.

Amid criticism of Apple’s innovation, anticipated upgrades for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max include a titanium chassis, solid-state Action button, and upgraded UWB. The standard iPhone 15 models are set to adopt the Dynamic Island design, while the entire range is poised to benefit from advanced stacked battery technology.

Though potential price increases may concern some buyers, limited stock at launch is expected to drive early upgrades. Recent leaks suggest that design changes planned for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will also extend to the entry-level iPhone SE4 in 2024. Notable changes include a design based on the iPhone 14, USB-C support, Face ID, and the inclusion of an Action button. These swift upgrades indicate Apple’s commitment to providing cutting-edge technology across its product range.

Apple’s strategy of integrating advanced features into budget models presents unique challenges. While Face ID and the Action button bring added value, they raise questions about cost and scale. Apple must carefully manage the implementation of these features while ensuring a seamless user experience.

Leaked images of iPhone 15 components hint at potential encryption features, sparking concerns about cable compatibility. While legality suggests that USB-C cables should work universally, questions arise about Apple’s intentions regarding fast charging and data transmission rates for certified cables.

USB-C adoption could significantly improve charging rates, rivaling Android counterparts. However, it remains uncertain whether Apple will leverage this capability. Leaks about Thunderbolt 3 speeds and fast charging for iPhone 15 Pro models have yet to be confirmed, leaving room for speculation.
