  • Navigating the Challenges of Modern Keyboard Smartphones

Navigating the Challenges of Modern Keyboard Smartphones

My journey into the world of smartphones began with the PalmOne Treo 650, a device that stood out with its physical keyboard. As time passed, I explored various Palm phones, progressing to the HP Pre3, until the downfall of Palm forced me to reluctantly switch to an iPhone 5 – a departure from the familiar tactile experience I had grown accustomed to. Despite transitioning to a touch-based virtual keyboard, my yearning for the physical keyboard’s reassuring tactility remained.

    keyboard

Then, a glimmer of hope emerged on the horizon with the introduction of the BlackBerry Priv, marking BlackBerry’s initial foray into the realm of Android smartphones. Boasting a sliding keyboard, the Priv seemed poised to fulfill my desire for a tactile typing experience on a modern device. However, reality did not match expectations. While the BlackBerry Priv sported an expansive 5.4-inch screen and the promise of BlackBerry’s keyboard prowess, its performance and battery life proved abysmal. The device heated up inexplicably, tarnishing the potential joy of using a physical keyboard.

Subsequently, the BlackBerry KeyOne and Key2 were released under the stewardship of brand licensee TCL. These devices held the promise of blending BlackBerry’s keyboard expertise with TCL’s experience in crafting Android smartphones. The result, however, was a mixed bag. While the keyboards were decent, the overall experience fell short due to performance issues and subpar cameras. Notably, battery life and pricing were commendable, making them relatively attractive options.

The landscape of keyboard smartphones has witnessed other contenders since the dissolution of the BlackBerry-TCL partnership. Regrettably, these offerings have largely fallen short of expectations. While some devices featured respectable keyboards or commendable performance, none managed to strike the delicate balance of delivering excellence across the board. In an era defined by smartphones that excel in all aspects, the notion of a “keyboard gimmick” fails to suffice in capturing consumer attention and loyalty.

Crafting a successful keyboard smartphone in the contemporary landscape hinges on two key pillars: an impeccable keyboard experience and an exceptional overall device. The keyboard must offer a satisfying tactile feedback, reminiscent of traditional keyboards, with each key press offering a consistent and responsive click. The placement of keys should intuitively facilitate thumb typing without requiring visual confirmation, a hallmark of well-designed keyboards.

Furthermore, the keyboard’s integration into the device’s software is paramount. It should seamlessly incorporate features like predictive text and autocorrect, ensuring a fluid and intuitive typing experience. The phone’s physical design must harmonize with the keyboard’s presence to achieve an optimal balance between weight distribution and usability. Previous examples, such as the BlackBerry Priv’s weight imbalance, serve as cautionary tales.

The screen size assumes a critical role, especially in the context of modern smartphone usage patterns. The BlackBerry KeyOne and Key2 suffered due to their compact screens, hindering users from fully embracing multimedia consumption and the immersive experience of full-screen applications. As the popularity of platforms like Instagram Reels and TikTok surges, a sufficiently sized screen has become essential.

Performance is non-negotiable. Users demand smooth, lag-free interactions, and a sluggish phone is unacceptable. A keyboard-equipped device must exhibit the same degree of responsiveness and fluidity expected from contemporary smartphones. Heat management and battery life, too, deserve meticulous attention to maintain user satisfaction during prolonged usage.

A glaring Achilles’ heel of past BlackBerry phones has been their underwhelming cameras. In an era where smartphone cameras are integral to everyday life, offering a subpar camera experience is no longer tenable. While not every device needs to rival the photographic prowess of industry giants, capturing images that closely mirror real-world scenes with minimal shutter lag is imperative.

Yamaha MT-07: The Motorcycle Marvel that Captivates Riders Worldwide

The Yamaha MT-07, which was introduced in 2014 and later launched as the Yamaha FZ-07 in the U.S. in 2015, has become a favorite among riders of all levels. Renowned for its affordability and superb performance, this motorcycle has gained a strong following worldwide. Let’s delve into the reasons behind the Yamaha MT-07’s immense popularity.

    Yamaha MT-07

Right from its debut, the MT-07 captured attention for its beginner-friendly design, making it an excellent choice for new riders seeking speed and excitement without requiring extensive experience. However, its appeal extends far beyond newcomers; experienced riders also appreciate its torque-driven power delivery, responsive handling, and striking aesthetics. Yamaha reports show that the MT-07 appeals to both first-time buyers (27%) and seasoned riders with over two decades of experience (36%).

Having sold more than 160,000 units and counting, the Yamaha MT-07 has cemented its reputation as a stylish, enjoyable, and budget-friendly option. The motorcycle was priced at $6,990 upon its 2015 release, offering exceptional value for its features. With a robust 270-degree parallel-twin engine that outperformed competitors, user-friendly handling, and eye-catching design, the MT-07 quickly became a hit.

Unlike some motorcycles that remain stagnant over the years, Yamaha has continually improved the MT-07 with each iteration. The company listens to feedback and enhances various aspects of the bike to maintain its allure. Yamaha has refined the suspension, addressing public concerns to ensure optimal handling. Updates extend to components like forks, valves, and brake discs, along with subtle refinements to the bike’s body, resulting in a more cohesive and attractive appearance.

Significant enhancements have been made to the 2023 MT-07 model, showcasing Yamaha’s commitment to innovation. A notable addition is the new 5-inch TFT display with ‘Y-Connect’ app connectivity, replacing the outdated LCD instrument panel seen on previous versions. Additionally, the 2023 model comes pre-wired for quick shift accessorization, allowing seamless installation of Yamaha’s ‘Quick Shift System.’ These modern touches enhance the bike’s user experience and functionality.

Central to the MT-07’s acclaim is its exceptional engine performance. The 4-stroke, liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin engine remains a powerhouse, delivering reliable and powerful performance that continues to impress in 2023. Despite a slight decrease in cylinder capacity from the 2015 FZ-07 to the 2023 MT-07, the engine’s overall performance has improved.

Harley-Davidson Evolution: Custom Works Zon’s Breathtaking Motorcycle Masterpiece

The Harley-Davidson Sportster is a well-known line of motorcycles that has been in continuous production for a long time. It’s not just about the bikes; it’s a whole way of life for Harley enthusiasts, where personalizing their rides is just as important as putting on your favorite outfit. When Harley-Davidson decided to discontinue their iconic Evolution-powered models, this culture of customization and personalization only grew stronger.

    Harley-Davidson Sportster

A prime example of this trend is seen with Custom Works Zon. This Japanese custom shop has embraced the spirit of Harley customization by crafting a captivating motorcycle based on the Evo Sportster. This shop is renowned in Japan for their custom work, and their latest creation speaks volumes about their skill and creativity. This motorcycle is a true classic with a touch of alluring charm, radiating authentic American chopper vibes that are sure to captivate your senses. Let’s delve into the intricate details of this remarkable machine.

The visual appeal of this custom motorcycle is simply breathtaking. It doesn’t resemble your typical Harley-Davidson Sportster at all, thanks to a plethora of custom-designed components. At first glance, you’ll notice the absence of a traditional fender, topped off with a vintage-style round headlight. The standout feature, however, is the eye-catching springer fork, meticulously crafted in-house by the skilled artisans at Zon. This unique fork design sets the stage for a low-set ape hanger handlebar, complete with custom grips, brake reservoir, and a triple clamp.

Moving towards the rear, you’ll encounter a bespoke fuel tank. Its peanut shape and compact size evoke nostalgia for old-school choppers. A closer inspection reveals distinctive contours and an attention-grabbing triple-tone paint job. Similarly, the back end channels classic chopper aesthetics, featuring a compact sissy bar that cleverly houses the license plate and tail lamp. The design also includes a shortened fender and side covers, with matching paint that harmonizes with the fuel tank.

But the details don’t end there; the more you observe, the more intricacies come to light. Among our favorites are the robust five-spoke wheels, finished in gleaming chrome, which echoes the finish of various other body parts. Notable features such as the mirror mounted on the chassis, knurled footpegs, ribbed custom saddle, and transparent air cleaner contribute to the overall appeal.

The transmission has also undergone modifications, with gears now shifted manually by hand, departing from the traditional foot controls. The engine’s new appearance is equally impressive, featuring an exposed clutch, chrome heads, and polished fins that exude a sleek and stylish appeal.

Underneath, the robust V-twin powerhouse finds its place within a specially crafted single downtube chassis, expertly fabricated by Zon’s skilled artisans. This chassis is anchored by the aforementioned springer fork at the front, and a direct link setup at the rear (note that there’s no rear suspension). Notably, the chassis integrates a minimalistic swingarm that houses a unique sprocket design, reminiscent of a disc brake.

  • Discover the World of Heat with an Arduino Thermal Camera

Discover the World of Heat with an Arduino Thermal Camera

Ever seen those inexpensive telescopes at the store? They come in fancy boxes with stunning pictures, usually from powerful telescopes like Hubble. However, what you see through them is often quite different. That’s a bit like what happens with [upir’s] Arduino thermal camera project. It’s important to take a closer look at this project because it mixes images you’d expect from an 8×8 sensor with pictures from a much better camera.

    thermal camera

The actual project is quite cool. It brings together a cheap 8×8 infrared (IR) sensor and an 8×8 LED panel to create a basic but functional thermal camera.

He makes good use of existing libraries, explaining how and why he chose them and made some necessary changes. One interesting part is when he demonstrates plotting HSV values to the LED array instead of the typical RGB values.

The rest becomes relatively simple once you have code ready to read the sensor and control the LEDs. However, just like the dime-store telescope, you shouldn’t expect astonishing results. Nevertheless, you probably have most of the necessary components lying around, except for the $20 sensor.

Around the ten-minute mark in the video, he showcases the same sensor in a commercial module that enhances resolution on an LCD screen. While still basic, he quickly reviews a commercial camera that can be plugged into your phone. (Feel free to skip the video beyond this point if you do not like subtle advertising.) We’ve actually discussed that camera before, as well as some of its competitors. While any of those options will outperform the 8×8 Arduino camera, they’ll also be pricier and won’t provide the satisfaction of building it yourself.

  • BMW’s Next-Gen Hybrid Sports Car: A Look into the Future of the i8 M

BMW’s Next-Gen Hybrid Sports Car: A Look into the Future of the i8 M

BMW isn’t giving up on high-performance hybrid sports cars, even if the current i8 didn’t quite meet their expectations. They’re working on a new model, possibly called the i8 M, which should be a major improvement in terms of performance. The Vision M Next concept from 2019 gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Expect more power, longer electric driving range, updated looks, and better handling in the i8 M compared to the current model.

    BMW

The new i8 M, set for the 2026 model year, is still a bit of a mystery. We’ll likely learn more as we get closer to its release, which is predicted to be around 2025 for the 2026 model.

As for the i8 M’s configuration and options, it’s hard to recommend specifics without more details. It’s likely that BMW will offer both a coupe and a convertible version, similar to the previous i8 lineup.

The i8 M will likely have a plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to the current i8. This means it could have an electric motor driving the front wheels and a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor for the rear wheels. The new model is expected to feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the previous three-cylinder, resulting in a total output of 591 horsepower, a significant increase from the i8’s 369 horsepower. This boost in power will put the i8 M in competition with cars like the Lexus LC500h and the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.

The previous i8 had a rather underwhelming electric driving range of 18 miles. While BMW hasn’t revealed battery details, the Vision M Next concept claimed an electric range of 62 miles. This suggests that the new i8 M might have a larger battery pack to achieve this extended range. More information about the battery, range, and charging capabilities will likely be available closer to the car’s launch.

Since the i8 M hasn’t been tested yet, the EPA hasn’t provided fuel consumption estimates. However, it’s anticipated that the i8 M will offer better fuel economy than the current model despite the increase in performance. For accurate fuel economy figures, it’s best to check the EPA’s website closer to the car’s release.

Not much is known about the interior of the i8 M, but it’s hoped that BMW will make improvements to make it more accessible. This could include front-hinged doors and a lower side sill. Like its predecessor, the i8 M will likely showcase BMW’s unique styling, innovative features, and eye-catching design. Storage and cargo space may be limited, but a front trunk (frunk) could provide extra room for luggage.

Predicting the future of in-car technology is tricky, but considering the Vision M Next concept, the i8 M might come equipped with advanced infotainment features like the Boost Pod, which uses glass screens and a head-up display to provide information and entertainment options.

As we move closer to 2026, more advanced driver-assistance features, and possibly even true autonomous driving, could be incorporated into the i8 M. Expected safety features include standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and optional adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving.

  • Camo Cool: Exploring the Features of Atomos Ninja and Ninja Ultra Monitors

Camo Cool: Exploring the Features of Atomos Ninja and Ninja Ultra Monitors

Atomos has just revealed its latest generation of monitor/recorders, the Ninja and Ninja Ultra. This marks a significant update since the original Ninja’s debut in 2010. Back then, having a monitor/recorder that could capture ProRes to a removable SSD was groundbreaking for DSLR shooters.

    Ninja

Although many cameras can now internally record in 4:2:2 10-bit and decent codecs, there remains a demand for external recorders/monitors, especially among mirrorless hybrids and budget digital cinema cameras lacking internal RAW recording capability.

The new Ninja and Ninja Ultra sport a distinctive ‘camo’ color polycarbonate body. They both offer 6K ProRes RAW, ProRes, DNxHD, and H.265 codecs. Notably, H.265 was formerly a paid option, but it’s now included. Oddly, there’s only a camo color option, and regular black isn’t available.

Despite the same screen and body design as their predecessors, the real changes are under the hood. The new Ninja targets mirrorless hybrid owners, while the Ninja Ultra focuses on optimizing camera-to-cloud tech and Atomos Connect workflows.

Out of the box, the Apple ProRes codec is ready for immediate use. To activate H.265 and DNx codecs, visit my.atomos.com, register your product, and follow simple online steps. For Apple ProRes RAW, go to the portal and plug in your RAW-compatible camera—this step is needed only once.

With an updated OS, HDR monitoring, and RAW recording capabilities, the Atomos Ninja 5.2″ 4K HDMI Recording Monitor supports DCI 4K HDMI and ProRes RAW up to 6K. It retains compatibility with existing Atomos monitor accessories.

    Highlighted Features:

    – 1920 x 1080 Touchscreen Display
    – 10-Bit Exterior Viewable Monitor
    – 4K HDMI 2.0 Input/Output
    – 6K30 ProRes RAW (select cameras)
    – AtomOS 11 Operating System
    – 1000 cd/m² Brightness
    – Supports Various Log Formats
    – ProRes and DNxHR/HD Recording
    – Record to Master Caddy II/III Hard Drive
    – L-Series Battery Slot, USB-C Port

The RecordAssist function schedules recordings, ideal for pre-arranged events. Multiple Ninjas can even record in different locations simultaneously.

The Ninja Ultra’s HDMI supports up to DCI 4K at 60 fps in various modes, with select cameras handling 3.5K RAW at 60 fps. Over 55 cameras support RAW recording over HDMI with the Ninja Ultra, reaching up to 8K at 30 fps.

The Atomos Ninja Ultra 5.2″ 4K HDMI Recording Monitor maintains the form factor of its predecessors, compatible with most Atomos monitor accessories. It records ProRes RAW up to 4K 60p while simultaneously recording HD 60p to H.265. It supports automatic matching filenames, timecodes, and works with ARRI, Canon, and RED cameras, with more to come.

Curiously, there’s an image of an Atomos Ninja Ultra on an ARRI Alexa Mini, even though the Alexa Mini lacks an HDMI output.

Ninja Ultra’s new 4K camera-to-cloud mode lets you upload higher quality, higher bitrate H.265 video with better framerates. These smaller H.265 files are ideal for camera-to-cloud workflows and quick use on social media, sports, or news.

By adding an Atomos Connect module to a Ninja or Ninja Ultra, you enable Atomos RemoteView. This groundbreaking tech lets you share live views from your Atomos screen wirelessly with other Atomos monitors, iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs. RemoteView transforms remote production with innovative features.

For the Ninja Ultra, the Atomos Connect module offers lower latency, higher throughput, and a more stable Wi-Fi 6E connection. Atomos leads by incorporating this advanced Wi-Fi standard into cloud-enabled products.

Atomos introduces an overhauled operating system, AtomOS 11. It’s cleaner, faster, and fresher thanks to hardware optimizations. Notably, AtomOS 11 introduces new features like EL Zone exposure referenced colorized image, ARRI False Color, and new scheduled playback & recording tools—a welcome addition after 13 years of waiting for standardized false color.

The robot’s code, structural drawings, and even programming methods for its various sensing capabilities are available to the public. This open approach allows technology enthusiasts and developers to experiment and tinker with the product, making it an appealing option for those interested in exploring its potential.

  • Potential Rebirth: Rumors of a PSP Resurrection for Modern Gamer

Potential Rebirth: Rumors of a PSP Resurrection for Modern Gamer

Sony’s PlayStation Portable, or PSP, gained immense popularity upon its release in 2004. While its lifespan was relatively short, lasting about a decade, this handheld device transformed the world of mobile gaming and left a lasting impact on the era of console gaming.

     PlayStation Portable, or PSP

As games became more demanding and required substantial battery power, Sony shifted its focus towards full-size consoles rather than handheld gaming devices. However, a sense of déjà vu might be in store as rumors are swirling about a potential revival of the PSP. Known as “Project Q Lite,” this streaming PSP handheld, designed for PlayStation Remote Play, is anticipated to debut by this year’s end.

It’s important to note that this remote play gadget won’t function as a standalone gaming device or even a cloud gaming handheld device. Instead, it will serve as a platform for streaming your PS5 games. As of now, we can’t confirm this aspect with certainty. While a standalone device provides users with greater freedom, Sony’s intentions remain unknown. It would be more advantageous for the next-generation PSP to possess such capabilities.

This potential development presents us with yet another reason to explore another PlayStation portable handheld that could capture the attention of discerning gamers who prioritize their preferences. The concept render envisions a more ergonomic body design compared to the original PSP’s angular structure. Placing the buttons closer to the upper portion of the device benefits those with larger hands, though it might prove slightly uncomfortable for those with smaller hands. On the other hand, the curved trigger buttons seem to offer ergonomic comfort for both types of users.

While the PSP was a formidable handheld console during its time, an upgraded PSP Pro with enhanced power would be a welcome sight. Such enhancements would lead to improved graphics and gameplay, ensuring the console remains relevant in the future. An upgraded PSP Pro could feature a higher-resolution display, potentially reaching 1080p or even higher, to enhance the visual quality of games.

An extended battery life allowing for several hours of gameplay without constant recharging would also be ideal. Incorporating backward compatibility with PSP and PS Vita games would also be beneficial if it becomes an option. This feature would enable individuals to relish their classic PSP and PS Vita games on a modern console.
