  • Li-Fi: The Next Generation of Wireless Technology

Li-Fi: The Next Generation of Wireless Technology

Li-Fi, a new technology that could replace Wi-Fi, is gaining attention for its incredible speed and advantages. While Wi-Fi 7 is on its way, the IEEE standards body has introduced the IEEE 802.11bb light communications standard to support Li-Fi. Unlike Wi-Fi, which uses wireless signals, Li-Fi utilizes infrared light, which is invisible to humans, to provide wireless optical connectivity. This can offer speeds up to 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.

    Li-Fi

Li-Fi has some significant advantages over Wi-Fi. Firstly, it can deliver signals without interference from radio waves. This makes it a promising alternative, especially considering that Li-Fi already has a competing standard called G.9991 from the International Telecommunication Union.

Companies like Signify and pureLiFi are already working on Li-Fi technology. For example, pureLiFi has developed the Light Antenna One system, which meets the 802.11bb standards. This module can be integrated into smartphones and boasts data speeds exceeding 1Gbps. However, its range is limited to devices within 10 feet and has a narrow transmission angle of 24 degrees.

Despite these limitations, Li-Fi offers significant benefits. It provides better security since its signals are less likely to pass through walls, ensuring data privacy. Moreover, Li-Fi transmitters can be easily installed in existing light fixtures in offices, simplifying implementation. The higher data speeds of Li-Fi make it ideal for applications like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and gaming devices that require fast connectivity. Additionally, Li-Fi promises low latencies, enhancing user experiences.

Although Li-Fi is still in its early stages, it holds great potential for the future. In a few years, we may be discussing Li-Fi with the same familiarity as Wi-Fi. Its faster speeds, improved security, and ease of integration into existing infrastructure make it an exciting technology to watch out for.

  • Six-Cylinder Bike: The Symphony of Lisbon’s Unik Edition

Six-Cylinder Bike: The Symphony of Lisbon’s Unik Edition

If you’ve never had the chance to hear a motorcycle with six cylinders in full throttle, you’re missing out on a true mechanical symphony. That’s exactly what Lisbon’s Unik Edition has achieved with their latest project—a café racer built around a screaming six-cylinder Benelli Sei.

    Benelli Sei

The Benelli Sei may not be the most well-known six-cylinder classic motorcycle (that title goes to the Honda CBX), but it was the first production bike to feature a six-cylinder engine. Benelli introduced the 750 Sei in the early 1970s and later released the redesigned 900 Sei in 1979, boasting 80 horsepower and angular bodywork. Only 2,000 units of the Benelli 900 Sei were ever produced, and they came with a hefty price tag.

Tiago Gonçalves and Luis Gonçalves, the founders of Unik Edition (no relation), embarked on this project using a 1979 Benelli 900 Sei, but very little of the original bike remains. They stripped it down to its frame and engine, replacing or rebuilding almost everything else.

“Our goal was to create an incredible machine with six exhausts that is also easy to ride,” says Tiago.

To ensure they built upon a solid foundation, the duo thoroughly refreshed and tuned the engine. Having serviced several six-cylinder Benellis and Hondas before, they were well acquainted with these powerful motors. The Sei’s three Dell’Orto carbs now breathe through new pod filters.

However, it was during the modification of the chassis that things truly became interesting. They started by removing the factory subframe and fabricating a new one. They then made strategic cuts and reinforcements to the frame. The most ambitious modification, though, involved swapping in a single-sided swingarm from an early-2000s Ducati Monster S4R.

This required redesigning the rear end with a new shock mount to accommodate a modern mono-shock setup. It also involved aligning everything, from the swingarm pivot to the sprockets, to fit a wide 190 rear tire.

The rider is greeted by a digital Motogadget speedometer, neatly molded into the headlight housing. Motogadget also supplied the switches, grips, keyless RFID ignition, and bar-end turn signals and mirrors. The handlebars are from LSL, and the throttle is a Domino part.

At the rear, a tidy license plate bracket positions the plate behind the rear wheel without extending the tail section unnecessarily. It features a Koso license plate light and a pair of small Motogadget LED turn signals. Completing the build is the pièce de résistance of any six-cylinder custom bike—the exhaust. Unik Edition crafted a complete stainless steel six-into-six system, featuring three compact mufflers stacked on each side.

  • The Thunderbird 6T: Triumph’s Powerhouse Cruiser That Made History

The Thunderbird 6T: Triumph’s Powerhouse Cruiser That Made History

When people think of iconic American motorcycles, Harley-Davidson usually comes to mind. However, there is another contender for the title, and that is Triumph. While Harley dominates the world of American motorcycles, Triumph introduced a heavyweight challenger called the 6T Thunderbird.

    6T Thunderbird

In the 1950s, when cruiser bikes were at their peak, the 6T Thunderbird stood out among the Harley Panheads on the roads. It gained further popularity by being featured in a popular film of that era, solidifying Triumph’s status as a serious competitor to Harley in the cruiser segment.

Although the Thunderbird line embodies the cruiser style, it has a more stripped-down feel compared to most American cruisers. It is a simpler and more primitive bike, yet somehow lighter and sportier than the typical Harleys or Indians of the mid-20th century. The Thunderbird owes much of its power and size to American preferences and demands. Vintage 6T Thunderbirds in good condition are highly sought after by collectors and vintage motorcycle enthusiasts, commanding high prices.

Triumph was originally founded in the late 19th century, and after manufacturing various mechanical items, they created their first motorcycle in 1902. In the 1930s, Triumph faced financial challenges but found a turning point when they started exporting motorcycles to the United States, becoming their largest market. In 1949, Triumph responded to the American market’s demand for more powerful bikes by introducing the Thunderbird. This model, specifically the 1950 Thunderbird 6T, became one of the most significant and historical motorcycles ever made.

The Thunderbird 6T had a unique design with decent fenders, and many components were enclosed in a nacelle housing for easy cleaning after riding in the British rain. It featured a rigid brazed-lug frame with sprung hub suspension, giving it a more industrial and minimalist look compared to the flashy chromed Harleys of the time. The Thunderbird had a more conservative color scheme, reflecting European tastes, and its parallel twin 650cc engine was a first for Triumph. The US export model had a higher compression ratio, delivering more power and a top speed of over 100 mph.

Today, the Thunderbird remains a symbol of classic motorcycle heritage, representing Triumph’s challenge to the great American cruisers. Its popularity endures, and it holds a special place in motorcycle history.

  • Honor Magic V2 Sets New Records for Foldable Phones: Slimness and Weight Achievements

Honor Magic V2 Sets New Records for Foldable Phones: Slimness and Weight Achievements

With the launch of Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 2 last year, it was expected that other brands would soon follow with similarly slim foldable phones. This year, we saw Huawei’s Mate X3 and Google’s Pixel Fold, which both offered impressive thinness. Now, another Chinese brand, Honor, has surpassed Huawei with an even slimmer and lighter foldable phone called the Honor Magic V2.

    Xiaomi's Mix Fold 2

The Honor Magic V2 is the first foldable phone to have a folded thickness of less than 1cm and weighs less than top flagship candybar phones like the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. When folded, it measures just 9.9mm thick, and when unfolded, it is only 4.7mm thick.

It weighs only 231g, making it lighter than the Oppo Find N2 and Mate X3. The Magic V2 achieved this breakthrough by incorporating a new hinge design made from 3D-printed aerospace-grade titanium and proprietary steel parts. It also features a flexible OLED panel from China’s BOE and has been certified to withstand over 400,000 folds by TÜV Rheinland.

The Magic V2 comes with a 5,000mAh battery, surpassing other foldable phones in terms of capacity. It supports Honor’s 66W fast charging but does not support wireless charging due to the device’s slimness. Honor had to slim down various components like the vapor cooling chamber, antenna, aluminum mid-frame, fingerprint module, USB-C connector, and speakers to achieve this compact design.

The phone offers a 6.43-inch OLED screen on the outside and a 7.92-inch flexible panel when unfolded, both with adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz and HDR10+ support. The displays also feature eye protection measures to reduce eye fatigue and aid better sleep.

The Magic V2 is equipped with flagship-level specifications, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, NFC, triple microphones, Bluetooth 5.3, and infrared remote capabilities. It runs on MagicOS 7.2, based on Android 13, promising fast performance for 50 months.

The rear camera setup includes a 50MP main camera with optical stabilization, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 20MP 2.5x zoom camera, all with optical stabilization. There are also 16MP selfie cameras on both the external and internal displays. The Magic V2 is available for pre-order in China, starting at 8,999 yuan (approximately $1,250) for the 256GB version and going up to 11,999 yuan ($1,670) for the 1TB Ultimate Edition.

While it remains uncertain if the Magic V2 will have a global release, enthusiasts can find ways to acquire it from China. Honor has not provided confirmation on international availability but may reveal more details at IFA in September. Meanwhile, there is anticipation for Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones, which are expected to compete with the Magic V2 in terms of quality and features.

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Series to Feature 65W Fast Charging with Stacked Batteries

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series to Feature 65W Fast Charging with Stacked Batteries

According to a reliable source called RcloudS, it seems that the next versions of Samsung’s smartphones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S24+, could have a significant improvement in their fast charging capabilities. Currently, these devices support fast charging up to 45W, but the tipster suggests that this could increase by 45% to 65W.

    Galaxy S24+

This enhancement would be achieved by using stacked batteries, a new technology that improves performance and charging speed. To manage the potential increase in heat generated by stacked batteries, Samsung plans to incorporate a cooling gel.

Stacked batteries are considered safer than single Lithium-ion batteries, despite the fact that they may get hotter due to lower heat dissipation. Samsung is currently testing these batteries in prototype models, but the necessary equipment to implement them has not yet arrived at the company’s Cheonan factory.

However, there might be a limitation in the availability of stacked batteries, and as a result, the base model of the Galaxy S24 series may not be equipped with them. Consequently, the lower-end variant would still offer fast charging speeds of up to 25W, while the higher-end models, the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S24+, would provide the improved 65W fast charging. In the future, Samsung may also consider implementing stacked batteries in other models such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Interestingly, it appears that Apple is also planning to adopt stacked batteries for their upcoming iPhone 15 lineup. This suggests that stacked batteries could become a trend in the mobile industry, offering users faster charging speeds and enhanced performance.

Android 14 Beta Program Approaches Final Stage with July Release

Google’s Android 14 beta program is coming to an end soon, with July being the final month before a potential stable release in August. Over the past five months, Google has been refining the build and fixing numerous bugs. Now, Android 14 Beta 4 has been released, bringing with it a substantial list of bug fixes.

    Android 14 beta program

Initially, the update was expected to arrive on July 5, but it was delayed slightly due to the holiday. Google announced the new build today, starting with eligible Pixel devices like the Pixel 4a 5G. The update first appeared as a generic system image (GSI) on Google’s DSU Loader utility before becoming available for phones and tablets.

The latest update has a build number of UPB4.230623.005 and includes the July security patches. Users have reported a download size of approximately 200MB, although this may vary depending on the device. Google has provided an extensive list of bug fixes in the release notes. Notably, this is the first beta build to be made available for Google’s new Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet devices. Users can enroll in the beta program to receive prerelease updates, just like with any other Pixel device.

Based on previous release cycles, this is likely the second-to-last beta build of Android 14. Last year, Android 13 Beta 4 was released in early July, followed by a Beta 4.1 release in late July before the stable version was made public in August. It seems that a similar trajectory is being followed this year.

While the update has started rolling out, it may take some time to reach all users, depending on their device and carrier. For those who want to expedite the process, the Android Flash Tool can be used to sideload the OTA or flash the factory images in about 15 minutes.
