BMW Z4 M40i Adds Manual Transmission for Driving Enthusiasts

Porsche sells many manual transmission sports cars, even in the U.S., with a lot of people choosing stick-shift 718 and 911 models. Seeing this, BMW has decided to offer the 2025 BMW Z4 convertible with a manual transmission for the first time. They hope this will attract new customers. The manual option comes with a specially tuned “Handschalter” package and is only available on the more powerful M40i trim, at least for now.’

The manual transmission is only offered with the M40i trim, which has a 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The car has a top speed of 155 mph and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. For now, BMW has only provided updates for the M40i model year.

Cars with the manual transmission now come with bi-color M light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design, with 19-inch wheels at the front and 20 inches at the rear. All M40i trims, whether manual or automatic, come with BMW’s variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, an M Sport differential at the rear axle, and an adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

As part of the “Handschalter” manual trim package, the exterior of the car features extended shadowline black high-gloss exterior trim pieces, red brake calipers, and dark badging. There’s also an exclusive San Remo Green metallic paint color available only on manual cars. Inside, there’s a choice of five different Vernasca leather upholstery options. Additionally, there’s another exclusive green exterior color called BMW Individual Frozen Deep Green metallic, which is only available with the manual transmission and costs $2,950 extra.

The “Handschalter” package adds $3,500 to the price of the M40i, which starts at $66,295 for the 2024 model year. BMW has not yet released updated pricing for the 2025 model year. The updated Z4 with the manual transmission is set to launch in March.
