  • Hollywood keeps making lots of movies about drugs and addiction

Hollywood keeps making lots of movies about drugs and addiction

At the Sundance Film Festival in January, I saw many movies about drugs and alcohol. They were everywhere—comedies, dramas, horror films, and biopics—all filled with stories about dealers, addicts, and different kinds of drugs like pills, marijuana, meth, and cocaine.

    drugs and addiction

The movies were so depressing that by the end of the week, I felt overwhelmed. It seemed like the Sundance Film Festival had become all about drugs.

It’s true that drug abuse is a big problem in America, but flooding the movies with stories about drugs isn’t going to bring more people to the theaters. Some of the films were good, but many were bad. Watching so many of them together wasn’t a good experience.

You might think that this trend was just a one-time thing at the Sundance Festival, which is known for showing edgy independent films. But the festival is still important in the movie world, and it often shows what filmmakers care about. Some years, the festival focuses on true stories or heartwarming films, but in 2023, drugs were a big theme.

One movie, “Little Death,” showed David Schwimmer as a TV writer who struggles with pills. Another, “The Outrun,” had Saoirse Ronan playing an alcoholic in London. Even a romance film called “My Old Ass” had a scene where a young woman takes mushrooms and sees her future self.

By the end of the festival, I was hoping for something more uplifting, but I didn’t find it. The last movie I watched, “Rob Peace,” was about a black teenager from New Jersey who goes to Yale but ends up selling drugs and getting killed. It felt like every movie was about drugs, and it was depressing to watch. These movies might try to be brave or risky, but after seeing so many of them, they just seemed lazy.

Leonardo DiCaprio Joins Fight to Save Endangered Birds in Tasmania

Renowned actor Leonardo DiCaprio has shifted his attention from Hollywood glamour to Tasmania’s lush forests, shedding light on the urgent need to protect the swift parrot, a bird facing extinction. With a single social media post, DiCaprio, known for his award-winning acting, raised awareness among his vast online following about the perilous situation of Tasmania’s swift parrots.

    DiCaprio

Sharing the success of Australian conservationists who secured a temporary halt to logging in crucial swift parrot nesting areas, DiCaprio emphasized the importance of preserving these habitats. His message underscored the dire situation faced by the remaining 750 swift parrots, whose survival hangs in the balance if logging continues in Eastern Tasmania’s forests.

DiCaprio’s advocacy has sparked enthusiasm among environmental groups, including the Bob Brown Foundation, founded by former Greens leader Bob Brown. Extending an invitation to DiCaprio to experience Tasmania’s natural beauty firsthand, Brown’s foundation hailed the actor’s influential support, which has propelled the swift parrot’s conservation efforts onto the global stage.

The spotlight on Tasmania’s swift parrot has reignited calls for the Australian government to fulfill its commitments to protect native forests. Felicity Wade of the Labor Environment Action Network has condemned logging as a “travesty,” urging policymakers to take decisive action. However, Tasmania’s logging debate remains contentious, with local political parties divided in their stance on the industry.

DiCaprio’s involvement in the swift parrot’s conservation is not merely symbolic but holds the promise of real change for Tasmania’s avian inhabitants. Through his organization, Re: Wild, DiCaprio invites others to join the cause, signaling a broader movement to restore forests and safeguard Tasmania’s natural heritage.

  • Positive Signs Ahead for Hollywood Movie Releases, According to Cineplex CEO

Positive Signs Ahead for Hollywood Movie Releases, According to Cineplex CEO

Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob is optimistic about the supply of Hollywood movies improving in 2024. He believes that there will be enough films reaching theaters this year and next to alleviate the film supply issues that arose following the end of the dual writers and actors strikes.

    Ellis Jacob

Jacob noted positive signs such as Disney’s announcement of Moana 2 for a theatrical release on November 27 and the upcoming release of Dev Patel’s action thriller Monkey Man. These developments are seen as good news for the exhibition sector, according to Jacob.

He anticipates Hollywood’s production schedule returning to normal throughout 2024 and into the following year. Looking ahead to the last quarter of the year, Jacob highlighted several titles, including Joker: Folie à Deux, Gladiator 2, Moana 2, Lord of the Rings, another Karate Kid movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which are expected to drive box office recovery.

This marks a significant change from 2023, when Cineplex relied on fewer Hollywood releases, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Aquaman 2, to drive box office sales. Jacob sees March as a crucial month, with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 serving as a major test for exhibitors.

To compensate for short-term supply challenges from Hollywood, Cineplex is also looking to international film titles. Despite challenges, the exhibitor saw overall revenues rise by 1.7 percent to $315 million during the fourth quarter, with theater attendance increasing by 4.2 percent to 9.59 million patrons.

Top-performing Hollywood titles during the latest quarter included Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. However, box office revenues for the fourth quarter were only 68 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, resulting in a net loss of $9 million for Cineplex during the latest financial quarter.

Key metrics also showed a slight decrease in box office revenue per patron but an increase in concession revenue per patron compared to the same period in 2022. Despite ongoing challenges, Jacob remains hopeful about the future of the exhibition industry and the return of Hollywood movies to theaters.

Behind the Scenes: Britney Spears and Ben Affleck’s Unforgettable Kiss

Britney Spears recently shared a fun fact about her past on Instagram, revealing that she once kissed Ben Affleck. In a now-deleted post, she posted an old photo of herself, Affleck, and songwriter Diane Warren. Spears confessed that she had forgotten to mention the kiss in her memoir.

    Ben Affleck

In her Instagram caption, Spears praised Affleck as an amazing actor before dropping the bombshell about their kiss. She admitted that she had honestly forgotten about it until seeing the photo. Spears teased that she wished she could share the full story of what happened that night.

After a few hours, Spears deleted the post without giving a specific reason. Affleck did not comment on the revelation either. Affleck is happily married to Jennifer Lopez, while Spears married dancer Sam Asghari in 2022, although they split up a year later.

Spears’ memoir, “The Woman in Me,” did not include the Affleck incident but did delve into her relationship with Justin Timberlake, making some harsh accusations about their breakup. However, in late January, Spears seemed to extend an olive branch to Timberlake by complimenting his new song, “Selfish,” on Instagram and apologizing for any offense caused by her book.

Timberlake’s response during a New York City concert suggested he wasn’t interested in reconciliation, leading Spears to fire back on Instagram. Spears’ revelation about kissing Affleck added a surprising twist to her past, showing that even celebrities have unexpected stories from their lives.

This marks their fourth collaboration, following their work together on “True Romance” in 1993, “Inglourious Basterds” in 2009, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in 2019, which earned Pitt his first Oscar for best-supporting actor. Tarantino has praised Pitt as “one of the last remaining big-screen movie stars”.

He compared the character’s reviews to a mix of early Howard Stern and Travis Bickle. Filming for “The Movie Critic” is expected to begin either at the end of this year or in early 2025.
