Choosing the Right Laptop: A Guide to Upgradeable Options

January 4, 20242 Mins Read

In recent times, it’s becoming rare to find laptops that you can upgrade. Most laptops have sealed chassis, making it impossible for users to open them. Even if you manage to open them, there’s usually nothing inside that you can upgrade.

However, some laptops still allow upgrades, even if it’s just for RAM or storage. These laptops stand out because they offer flexibility for changes in the future. Generally, the best upgradeable laptops are larger in size. Smaller laptops, typically 14 inches or less, seldom have parts that users can access.

Here are a few laptops that allow upgrades:

1. Framework Laptop 13: This laptop stands out as the only one where you can replace every component.

2. Dell XPS 15: A fast, well-built, and portable 15-inch laptop that is upgradeable.

3. Dell XPS 17: A 17-inch laptop that provides long-term flexibility for upgrades.

4. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5: A powerful business laptop with room for future upgrades.

5. Microsoft Surface Pro 9: A rare 2-in-1 laptop with an upgradable SSD.

Modern laptops typically meet the needs of the average user. Performance is a concern if you’re on a budget or have specific requirements. Gamers, for instance, should look for a laptop with a fast discrete GPU, while creators need a fast CPU and GPU for photo and video editing.

Laptops come in various sizes, and your choice depends on your specific needs. If you require power and a large screen for editing, a 15-inch or larger laptop is suitable. However, if you’re always on the go and need portability, a 14-inch or smaller laptop is better. Battery life is crucial unless you’re comfortable carrying a charger.

Considering that laptops are often handled and carried in various environments, build quality matters. Not all laptops are built equally, and you can find well-built options at various price points. Ensure that you choose a laptop that aligns with your lifestyle and durability requirements.
