Rice: Beneficial or harmful for our health?

May 31, 20232 Mins Read

Rice is a highly popular food in many countries, such as Bangladesh, India, and China. It serves as a staple for half of the world’s population, meeting their carbohydrate needs. However, there is an ongoing debate regarding whether rice is good for the human body.

During the processing of white rice, the fiber coating is removed, making it easier to cook but lower in nutrients. On the other hand, brown rice, which retains its fiber, is rich in nutrients. White rice lacks fiber, resulting in lower nutritional content. Additionally, it is low in protein, making it less valuable as a nutritious food. In 100 grams of white rice, there are 131 kcal, 2.8 grams of protein, and 0.5 grams of fiber. In comparison, 100 grams of brown rice contains 132 kcal, 3.8 grams of protein, and 1.5 grams of fiber.

Consuming excessive amounts of white rice can lead to weight gain, as it increases the amount of carbohydrates in the blood. Conversely, brown rice does not contribute to weight gain and helps maintain balanced insulin levels. It also has a relatively higher protein content. Due to the risks associated with consuming too much white rice, nutritionists recommend opting for brown rice instead.

It is advisable not to sleep immediately after eating rice. Engaging in physical activity and waiting for approximately three hours is recommended. Brown rice has been found to help prevent various diseases, including diabetes and cancer. Many athletes choose white rice after intense workouts because it quickly provides energy and restores glycogen levels.

White rice is beneficial for those with gastric issues, as it is easier to digest. Brown rice, on the other hand, aids digestion and improves intestinal function. It is worth noting that brown rice may contain trace amounts of arsenic, so it is important to boil the rice for an adequate period of time before consumption.

while rice is a popular food, the nutrient content varies between white and brown rice. Brown rice is generally considered healthier due to its higher fiber and protein content, as well as its ability to regulate insulin levels. However, both types of rice can be part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation.
