BMW’s New R12 Cruiser: Compact Design with Classic Appeal

BMW has just revealed its new motorcycle, the R12 cruiser, globally. This bike is the smaller version of the premium R18 cruiser available in India and is part of BMW’s 1,170cc heritage range. What’s interesting is that the R12 looks quite different from its larger 1,800cc sibling and has its own unique appearance.

It’s more compact, with a shorter wheelbase and a lighter weight. BMW has given it a classic retro style, featuring a round headlamp, boxy fuel tank, and a rounded rear fender. Moreover, there are various optional accessories available, allowing riders to customize the bike to their liking. Different wheels, seats, handlebars, and windscreens provide a range of personalization options.

Under the hood, the R12 cruiser is powered by BMW’s older 1,170cc boxer-twin engine, previously seen on the discontinued R1200GS. However, BMW has made some updates, including a new airbox, revised cylinder head covers, and stylish single-sided exhausts.

The motorcycle also comes with a new two-piece tubular bridge steel space frame, advanced electronics, and improved cycle parts compared to the original R nineT. Despite its classic design, the front suspension is a modern adjustable setup, and the brakes are sourced from Brembo.

Smart and Stylish: BMW’s Vario Luggage for the R1300 GS

BMW has introduced an updated, electrified version of its Vario luggage system for the new BMW R1300 GS adventure bike. This innovative luggage system includes both side cases and a top box designed to cater to the needs of modern riders.

    BMW R1300 GS

The top box and side cases are made of hard materials and offer significant storage capacity. However, what sets them apart is their electrification. These cases are equipped with the ability to charge electronic devices like smartphones, laptops, or any other gadget with a USB-A connector. They provide a power supply of 15W (5V/3A) for efficient charging. Both the left-side case and the top box are capable of charging your devices.

Additionally, the Vario luggage system can be integrated into the BMW R1300 GS’s remote central locking system for added convenience. Even if you misplace the remote fob, you can still open the Vario boxes using a regular mechanical key.

This updated system allows for a maximum storage capacity of 97 liters. It incorporates a wheel adjuster that makes it easier to change the volume, eliminating the need for the previous two-step system. You can adjust the combined volume of the side cases between approximately 49 liters and 60 liters (with an adjustment of 5.5 liters per side case), and the top box can be varied from 28 liters to 36 liters. Each side case has a load limit of 10kg, while the top box is limited to 6kg. External loads of up to 2kg can be attached to the top box, and up to 1kg to each side case.

However, it’s important to note that BMW recommends a maximum permissible speed of 112 mph when riding with the Vario system. Additionally, this new system is not compatible with previous BMW GS models, including the previous R1250.

To enhance the functionality of the cases, BMW offers Vario Inner Bags as accessories. These bags come in two sizes: a larger bag for each case and a smaller bag for each side case. The smaller bag can be placed on top of the larger bag inside the case. The larger bag designed for the left case features a padded compartment for electronic devices and a cable outlet, making it perfect for charging your gadgets on the go.

This innovative electrified Vario luggage system demonstrates BMW’s commitment to providing modern riders with practical and advanced solutions to enhance their riding experience. It combines the convenience of ample storage space with the ability to charge your electronic devices while on the road, catering to the needs of today’s tech-savvy motorcyclists.

  • BMW’s Next-Gen Hybrid Sports Car: A Look into the Future of the i8 M

BMW’s Next-Gen Hybrid Sports Car: A Look into the Future of the i8 M

BMW isn’t giving up on high-performance hybrid sports cars, even if the current i8 didn’t quite meet their expectations. They’re working on a new model, possibly called the i8 M, which should be a major improvement in terms of performance. The Vision M Next concept from 2019 gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Expect more power, longer electric driving range, updated looks, and better handling in the i8 M compared to the current model.

    BMW

The new i8 M, set for the 2026 model year, is still a bit of a mystery. We’ll likely learn more as we get closer to its release, which is predicted to be around 2025 for the 2026 model.

As for the i8 M’s configuration and options, it’s hard to recommend specifics without more details. It’s likely that BMW will offer both a coupe and a convertible version, similar to the previous i8 lineup.

The i8 M will likely have a plug-in hybrid powertrain similar to the current i8. This means it could have an electric motor driving the front wheels and a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor for the rear wheels. The new model is expected to feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the previous three-cylinder, resulting in a total output of 591 horsepower, a significant increase from the i8’s 369 horsepower. This boost in power will put the i8 M in competition with cars like the Lexus LC500h and the upcoming Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.

The previous i8 had a rather underwhelming electric driving range of 18 miles. While BMW hasn’t revealed battery details, the Vision M Next concept claimed an electric range of 62 miles. This suggests that the new i8 M might have a larger battery pack to achieve this extended range. More information about the battery, range, and charging capabilities will likely be available closer to the car’s launch.

Since the i8 M hasn’t been tested yet, the EPA hasn’t provided fuel consumption estimates. However, it’s anticipated that the i8 M will offer better fuel economy than the current model despite the increase in performance. For accurate fuel economy figures, it’s best to check the EPA’s website closer to the car’s release.

Not much is known about the interior of the i8 M, but it’s hoped that BMW will make improvements to make it more accessible. This could include front-hinged doors and a lower side sill. Like its predecessor, the i8 M will likely showcase BMW’s unique styling, innovative features, and eye-catching design. Storage and cargo space may be limited, but a front trunk (frunk) could provide extra room for luggage.

Predicting the future of in-car technology is tricky, but considering the Vision M Next concept, the i8 M might come equipped with advanced infotainment features like the Boost Pod, which uses glass screens and a head-up display to provide information and entertainment options.

As we move closer to 2026, more advanced driver-assistance features, and possibly even true autonomous driving, could be incorporated into the i8 M. Expected safety features include standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and optional adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving.
