Margot Robbie recently shared her experience before filming Barbie, where she starred and produced alongside Greta Gerwig. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Margot Robbie opened up about facing an “actor crisis” as filming approached.

She revealed visiting Greta Gerwig’s house and having a meltdown over the pressure of getting the movie started. Robbie expressed feeling overwhelmed, saying, “I’d spent years trying to get this movie going. And suddenly we’re going to shoot the thing. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I dunno how to do this.’ It happens before every single movie I’ve ever done.”

Greta Gerwig also recalled the moment when Robbie had doubts about taking on the role, describing it as an “actor crisis.” She shared, “I have a distinct memory of Margot coming over to my house before we started shooting and having a bit of an actor crisis: ‘How am I doing this?’ It’s the actor equivalent of facing a blank page.”

Barbie follows the journey of Margot Robbie’s character, a stereotypical Barbie doll, who faces an existential crisis when she begins to lose her spark and iconic Barbie traits. To solve the mystery, she ventures into the “real world” with Ryan Gosling’s Ken, exploring new experiences and challenges.

Despite the initial doubts, Barbie received recognition with eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Costume Design, Production Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The absence of nominations for Gerwig and Robbie in the Best Director and Best Actress categories sparked criticism from fans on social media. Despite the challenges and doubts, Barbie’s success and critical acclaim highlight the dedication and talent of its cast and crew.

Margot Robbie also talked about how people reacted to not getting nominated. She said, “The best part of this experience has been seeing how people reacted to the movie.” She said, “Whether it’s seeing what people are saying online, or just seeing how much pink there is in this room right now. I’ve never been part of something like this before. It feels really different. And I can’t think of another movie that has had such an effect on culture. It’s amazing to be in the middle of it.”

However, Margot Robbie’s co-stars Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera did get nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively. The movie was also nominated for Best Picture. Earlier, Ryan Gosling said in an interview with People that he was disappointed that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig didn’t get nominated.

He said, “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.” He said, “Their talent, hard work, and creativity made this movie possible. They made us laugh, they made us cry, they changed the culture, and they made history. They deserve to be recognized along with the other nominees.”

“Barbie,” released in 2023, was a huge success and featured Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell in supporting roles. The movie is a modern version of the Barbie story. In the movie, Barbie learns about the real world and the problems of patriarchy when she leaves her dreamy homeland.
