It is equipped with a new liquid-cooled DOHC 449.9cc single engine that delivers 65 hp and 36.14 ft-lbs of torque, outperforming the previous model with 54 hp and 31 ft-lbs of torque.

The improved power is attributed to innovations in the engine, including a larger bore and quicker stroke. New calculations indicate that the number of living cells on Earth surpasses the estimated count of sand grains and stars in the universe. Researchers estimate that there are one trillion times more cells than grains of sand on Earth and one million times more cells than there are stars in the universe. These calculations provide critical insights into our planet’s biological diversity and could help predict how lifeforms will utilize carbon in the future.

These calculations are essential for scientists in their quest to ask meaningful questions and comprehend the world around us. Being able to count and measure different aspects of our environment is fundamental for conducting scientific research.

Peter Crockford, a geologist at Carleton University, led the study. The research began with an inventory of the number of microbes in the ocean, soil, and Earth’s subsurface, combined with the count of cells in larger organisms, to determine the number of cells currently alive, which amounts to an astonishing 10^30 cells, primarily cyanobacteria.

The key to this calculation was primary productivity, the process that transforms carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon-based compounds that sustain life. These compounds, such as sugars and starches, travel up the food chain: photosynthesizing microbes and plants are consumed by other organisms, which, in turn, are eaten by larger organisms. All of these eventually die, decompose, and return CO2 to the atmosphere, completing the carbon cycle.

To understand how primary productivity has evolved over Earth’s history, the researchers analyzed various factors, such as the numbers and types of photosynthesizing organisms at different points in time, as well as the amount of food they produced. By examining the primary productivity of modern cells, they could estimate the number of cells needed to sustain past productivity levels. They also adjusted their calculations for factors like the emergence of different lifeforms and the impact of ice ages on their activity.

The research reveals that, over time, the number of cells on Earth has cycled through all of the planet’s carbon about 100 times. However, it also suggests that there is an upper limit to these numbers. Earth cannot support more than 10^41 cells.

The findings have been met with support from scientists in various fields. The numbers are seen as reasonable and realistic, providing insights into the evolution of life on Earth. The calculations also offer a glimpse into the future, where it’s suggested that changes in the Earth’s environment, including alterations in CO2 levels, could impact life on the planet, possibly leading to the decline of biomass and a radically transformed Earth in the distant future.

2024 BMW R 1300 GS Adventure Bike: Lighter and More Powerful Advancement

BMW Motorrad has unveiled its latest adventure bike, the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS, representing a significant step forward in the world of adventure motorcycles. This new model serves as the successor to the previous R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure, emphasizing weight reduction and enhanced performance while staying true to the iconic GS legacy.

The heart of the R 1300 GS is the renowned BMW Motorrad boxer twin engine, which has been in production for over a century. With a larger capacity and more aggressive bore/stroke measurements (106.5mm x 73mm), this 1,300cc engine remains air/oil/water-cooled and features four-valve cylinder heads, along with dual-overhead camshafts. Notably, it retains BMW’s ShiftCam variable valve timing technology, which was first introduced in the 2019 BMW R1250GS Adventure.

This potent engine now boasts a 13.3:1 compression ratio, an increase of 0.8 from its predecessor. It runs on premium 91-octane fuel from a 5.0-gallon aluminum fuel tank. Power is efficiently transferred to a road-friendly 17-inch rear spoked wheel via a six-speed gearbox, which is now positioned under the engine. A hydraulic oil-bathed multiplate clutch and reliable Cardan-style shaft final drive complete the powertrain. BMW states that the boxer twin delivers 145 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 109.9 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,500 rpm, making it the most powerful boxer twin in terms of horsepower.

The 2024 R 1300 GS introduces four distinct riding modes (Road, Rain, Enduro, and the new Eco setting). GoPro Hero 12 Black: Larger Sensor and Screen, Ultra Slow-Motion, and More

Shortly after DJI unveiled its new Osmo Action 4 action camera, leaked images of the upcoming GoPro Hero 12 Black have surfaced, suggesting some exciting improvements in image quality. These images, shared by @tech_insights4U on X (via The New Camera), appear to show a new GoPro with a larger 1-inch sensor, as indicated by a marking on the side, and a bigger screen with smaller borders.

However, it’s important to approach these images with caution since the source has no previous record of GoPro leaks. The marking indicating a ‘1-inch sensor’ is placed where GoPro usually displays the camera’s name, adding to the uncertainty. Despite this, the images appear convincing and show no obvious signs of manipulation. Many users have been hoping for GoPro to adopt a 1-inch sensor, especially since the Insta360 One R introduced an optional 1-inch sensor module in 2020.

The leaked images also suggest some potential features for the GoPro Hero 12 Black, which is expected to launch around mid-September. The larger screen could hint at a new 4K/240p ‘ultra slow-motion’ mode. The leaks also hint at an increase in sensor resolution from the Hero 11 Black’s 27MP to at least 30MP. A larger sensor would greatly enhance low-light performance, a weakness in previous GoPro models.

Earlier leaks also hinted at an edge-to-edge screen, although the leaked photo doesn’t completely match that description. While GoPro has traditionally kept a tight lid on rumors, with about a month left until its usual mid-September launch window, more information could surface in the coming weeks. The report also revealed some official images of the phone which showcases a semi-transparent design in two color variants. However, the GT 10 Pro seems to lack an LED strip, so it might not be as bright as the Nothing Phone (2).
