iPhone 15 Pro Max: Big changes coming to the camera to overtake Samsung?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is generating a lot of buzz as one of Apple’s likely fall releases. People are particularly interested in the phone’s camera setup, as cameras have become a significant factor in smartphone buying decisions. Apple has been known for producing some of the best camera phones on the market.

    iPhone 15 Pro Max

However, it’s important to note that the current top spot in camera phone rankings is held by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, not any of Apple’s iPhone 14 models. The Galaxy S23 Ultra impressed with its flexible 200MP main sensor and powerful telephoto features. Naturally, there is a lot of curiosity about how Apple will respond with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Some people are hoping to see Apple match Samsung feature for feature, but it’s crucial to remember where iPhone camera improvements should really focus.

In recent releases, Samsung has been increasing the megapixel count on its main cameras. The Galaxy S20 Ultra introduced a 108MP main camera, and subsequent updates increased the sensor size for better low-light performance. With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung pushed the megapixels further, opting for a 200MP sensor. This offers users a lot of flexibility, allowing them to capture photos at full resolution, combine pixels for brighter and more detailed shots, and more.

The results from testing the 200MP camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra were impressive, surpassing even the best iPhones available. Some people hope that Apple will respond by increasing the megapixels on its main camera as well. The iPhone 14 Pro models already saw a boost to 48MP, allowing for pixel binning and optimizing light capture or emphasizing detail in both 12MP and 48MP resolutions.

There were rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro Max would feature a larger sensor, offering brighter photos. However, subsequent rumors have suggested that the main camera sensor will remain the same as the current iPhone Pro models. This has left some people disappointed.

If the iPhone 15 Pro Max is indeed using the same main camera as its predecessor, how will it compete with the Galaxy S23 Ultra? The answer lies in the telephoto capabilities. The telephoto lens on the iPhone Pro models falls short compared to other camera phones. While the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers a 3x optical zoom, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a pair of telephoto lenses, one supporting 3x optical zoom and another with 10x capabilities. The S23 Ultra also boasts a more robust digital zoom up to 100x.

The good news is that rumors suggest the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope-style telephoto lens. This design allows for more space to boost magnification, resulting in a higher optical zoom. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to support a 6x optical zoom with this new lens.

It would be ideal if this feature were also available on other iPhone 15 models, but Apple tends to reserve premium features for its pricier models. Apple’s strategy of differentiating the Pro models from the standard iPhone has been successful, so they are likely to continue with this approach.

Ultimately, the key change Apple needs to make to compete with Samsung’s Ultra model is improving the telephoto lens. From what we’ve heard, this change is likely to happen. Anything else Apple introduces to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera setup would be a bonus.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra VS Oppo Find X6 Pro VS OnePlus 11: Camera Comparison

It’s time to put the cameras of the flagship phones to the test and find out which one performs the best. In this review, we compare the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Oppo Find X6 Pro, and OnePlus 11. We also mention the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but note that it falls short in certain areas.

    Xiaomi 13 Ultra

All of the phones in this test utilize a technique called pixel binning, which enhances the true length of each pixel. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra and Oppo Find X6 Pro feature the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor, developed in collaboration with renowned camera manufacturers. The OnePlus 11, being more affordable, uses the Sony IMX890 sensor.

In daylight conditions, the main cameras of all the phones performed well, even the OnePlus 11. However, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra stood out with its better sharpness and detail compared to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which displayed some graininess and artificial sharpening. The Oppo Find X6 Pro showed soft focus, while the OnePlus 11 delivered tasteful sharpness without over-sharpening.

When it comes to colors, the Galaxy S23 Ultra produced the most natural-looking photos, while the Xiaomi 13 Ultra and OnePlus 11 tended to depict colors more vividly. The white balance on the Xiaomi flagship was particularly impressive.

In low-light conditions, the Galaxy S23 Ultra performed the best with its excellent illumination, low grain, and high level of detail. The OnePlus 11 surprisingly delivered good results, although it struggled with fuzzy details in street photos. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra had some issues with fuzziness and color accuracy in low-light situations.

In terms of ultra-wide angle and macro photography, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra provided a broader field of view, while the Oppo Find X6 Pro showcased better sharpness, especially in the corners of the images. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra had room for improvement in sharpness and graininess toward the edges.

Zoom capabilities varied among the phones. The OnePlus 11 and Find X6 Pro fell behind in higher zoom levels, while the Xiaomi 13 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra excelled. The Galaxy S23 Ultra and 13 Ultra delivered excellent stabilization and performed well at higher zoom levels even in low-light conditions.

For selfies, the Galaxy S23 Ultra had the best sharpness and detail, while the Xiaomi 13 Ultra tended to airbrush facial features. The OnePlus 11 and Find X6 Pro were in between, with the OnePlus 11 having slightly reddish colors and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra making faces appear pale.

In terms of camera software, the Galaxy S23 Ultra offered the most customization options and settings, including Pro Mode and RAW image capture. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra had its own Pro Mode and the ability to access the sensor’s full resolution. The OnePlus 11 and Find X6 Pro had similar Pro Modes based on a unified code base.

No single phone triumphs in all aspects, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Xiaomi 13 Ultra offer the most comprehensive camera packages. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra excels in sharpness and detail, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra struggles with graininess and image information in daylight. The Oppo Find X6 Pro falls short in image sharpness and detail at higher zoom levels. The OnePlus 11, despite being more affordable, provides a satisfying camera experience. The battle for the best camera phone continues, and improvements are expected in future releases.
