The Google Story: Two Friends Who Changed the Internet

You may not believe that but before 2000, many people were using books to find information. Nowadays, things are different and faster. Want to know how tall a giraffe is? Google it. Curious about the distance between London and Manchester? Google it. Google has made life much easier with billions of daily searches. It all started with a search engine named “BackRub and two loyal friends.”

Larry Page and Sergey Brin came to be as friends at Stanford University in California in 1995. As their friendship going by, they thought about exciting ways to search for information on the net world. There were already search engines at that time. “Archie,” created in 1990, is often considered the first one.

Other search engines showed results based on how many times a search phrase was used. But Page and Brin wanted to create one that showed information based on importance and relevance. That’s where the name BackRub came from. The program looked at the internet’s “backlinks” — the number of other pages linked to a page — to figure out how important a website was.

In 1997, they changed the name to “Google.” This was based on the word “googol” — a math term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name showed that the search engine could find many results. In 1998, Page and Brin started the company. They got money from investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

They began working in a garage but soon needed more space. They found a home in Mountain View, California, where they are now. They kept growing. By 2004, the search engine had 200 million searches a day. Google also started new services like Gmail in 2004, Google Maps in 2005, and Google Chrome in 2008. Google also bought other companies, like YouTube.

In 2015, they accomplished a massive success and it was like making a new company called Alphabet Inc. Google was like to be the biggest part of this new company. Today, Alphabet Inc. is one of the world’s most valuable companies and it is worth almost 1.6 trillion USD. Now we are doing google for research and many difficult tasks.

In January 1925, Nome was gripped by a diphtheria epidemic. With the town’s supply of antitoxin expired, the lives of many, particularly children, hung in the balance. The nearest serum was located in Anchorage, nearly 700 miles away, and the only means of transportation during the treacherous winter was by dog sled.

The Great Race Against Time

A relay of dog sled teams was organized to transport the serum across the frozen landscape. Togo, a Siberian Husky with indomitable spirit, led his team through blinding blizzards and perilous ice. Covering an astonishing 234 miles, Togo and his musher, Leonhard Seppala, traversed the treacherous Norton Sound, where the ice was dangerously thin, and scaled mountains to deliver the serum in a record-breaking five and a half days.

Legacy of a Four-Legged Hero

Togo’s remarkable feat not only saved Nome but also cemented his place in history as one of the most heroic animals. His story of bravery and loyalty continues to inspire, as evidenced by the 2019 Disney film that recounts his incredible journey.

Earth’s Magnetic Field in Flux: What happened 41,000 years ago?

About 41,000 years ago the Earth experienced a big change in its magnetic field. This change is called the Laschamps event. The Earth’s magnetic field is like a shield protecting it from harmful space radiation. But sometimes, this shield becomes weaker.

During the Laschamps event, the Earth’s magnetic field weakened a lot. It even flipped, so the north and south poles swapped places. When this happened the Earth’s magnetic field couldn’t block out as much cosmic radiation from space. This exposed the Earth to dangerous cosmic rays and particles from the Sun.

Scientists studied evidence from ice and sediment cores to learn more about the Laschamps event. They looked at special atoms called cosmogenic radionuclides, which form when cosmic rays interact with the Earth’s atmosphere.

By studying these atoms, scientists can understand how much cosmic radiation hit the Earth during the Laschamps event. One important atom they studied is beryllium-10, which can tell us about changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.

During the Laschamps event, the Earth’s magnetic field was much weaker than it is now. This allowed a lot more cosmic rays to reach the Earth’s surface. Understanding events like the Laschamps event is important for predicting space weather and its effects on our planet. This research will be presented at a scientific conference in Vienna, Austria, by Sanja Panovska from GFZ Potsdam.

Classical guitarist Alexandra Whittingham showcases the iconic run in a video, emphasizing its historical significance. “I won’t rest until this piece gets the recognition it deserves,” she expresses. The journey of Gran Vals to becoming the Nokia ringtone began in 1994 when it was first included as “Ringtone Type 7” in the Nokia 2110. In 1997, it was renamed “Grande Valse” as a nod to its original title. However, in 1998, due to its strong association with Nokia, it was officially named “Nokia Tune,” solidifying its position as the flagship ringtone.

Over the years, various versions of the Nokia ringtone have emerged. Ian Livingstone crafted the first polyphonic MIDI rendition in 2001. In 2008, a guitar-based version was introduced with the Nokia N78, reflecting the musical trends of the time. Other notable versions include a slow piano rendition by Ryuichi Sakamoto for the Nokia 880 and a slow guitar version by Brian Eno for the Nokia 880 Sirocco Edition.

A long time ago, after a big war called World War I, the world went through a really hard time called the Great Depression. In the United States, things got really bad. The New York Stock Exchange, where people buy and sell parts of companies, crashed. Many lost their jobs, and factories shut down. People in big cities became homeless, and poor neighborhoods, called slums, appeared everywhere.

The Great Depression was a tough time all around the world. It was the worst economic crisis the modern world had ever seen. But before this hard time, the United States was doing really well after World War II. Many countries were jealous of how the U.S. was thriving.

During World War I, Europe was in a bad situation. The U.S. helped by sending food, weapons, and important things to Europe. This helped the U.S. grow because they were selling a lot to Europe. They built more industries and more people got jobs. America was becoming a rich and happy country.

Between 1920 and 1929, the stock market, where people buy and sell stocks, was doing great. Banks were giving money to people easily. But after the war, European countries wanted to become rich on their own, without depending on the U.S. So, they didn’t buy a lot from America anymore.

This was bad for the stock market. The sudden fall made everyone, including banks and regular people, very surprised. The economy started to get worse. People lost their jobs, and companies and banks had a hard time. Investors stopped putting money in, and farmers couldn’t sell their crops.

Many people who were doing well financially became poor. Just a few days ago, it was hard to find unemployed people. But in just a year, one and a half million people lost their jobs. This made things really tough, and bad things like suicides, murders, and robberies happened more often. People were struggling, and life became very hard during the Great Depression.

From Dirt Bikes to Reggae Vibes: The Unique Story of an Irie Triumph Street Twin

In the world of motorcycle customization, one can truly say, “your bike, your marriage.” And what if that marriage includes a reggae-inspired paint job? Well, that’s precisely what one motorcycle enthusiast requested, and Vietnam’s MFix Workshop brought this unique vision to life on a Triumph Street Twin.

This Triumph Street Twin may exude an “irie” vibe with its reggae-themed design, but don’t be fooled – it packs a punch when it comes to performance. The owner of this custom motorcycle isn’t just a reggae music fan; he’s also an avid dirt bike rider. This custom build combines both worlds, offering a striking appearance and a thrilling ride.

The customization journey began with a focus on the electronics. The client wanted a comprehensive suite of Motogadget electronics with smartphone integration, and that’s where MFix Workshop started. They removed the bike’s original wiring loom and replaced it with a Bluetooth-enabled Motogadget mo.unit controller. They also installed a lightweight Lithium-ion battery and a special box from Peak-Mod that allows for aftermarket speedometer use.

All these components fit neatly under the seat and are secured with red, yellow, and green cable ties. Digging deeper into the bike’s performance, MFix upgraded the engine with a new camshaft from TEC, a Dynojet Power Commander 6 ECU, heavy-duty EBS clutch plates, and other performance-enhancing modifications. They also removed the Street Twin’s emissions sensors to enhance its breathing.

The suspension and running gear also received a complete overhaul. MFix Workshop equipped the bike with adjustable Öhlins FG 621 forks in the front, along with CNC-machined yokes and a Matris steering damper. At the rear, they added an aluminum swingarm from a Triumph Thruxton R, paired with adjustable K-Tech Razor shocks.

This upgraded suspension not only enhances performance but also gives the Street Twin a more respectable ride height. The motorcycle now rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels from Kineo, wrapped in Metzeler Tourance tires, offering excellent street grip with a hint of gravel capability. Brembo Serie Oro brake calipers ensure reliable stopping power, and a Triumph Scrambler 1200 side stand accommodates the increased ground clearance.

In terms of bodywork, MFix Workshop shortened the Street Twin’s subframe and added a handcrafted composite flat track tail section. Topped with a leather seat, this tail section perfectly complements the Triumph’s stock fuel tank.

The front end features a powerful LED headlight and an enduro-style cowl from Rigid, mounted above a custom split mudguard design and flat track-style fork protectors. Towards the rear, you’ll find a bespoke MFix Performance radiator and an Evotech skid plate. Custom aluminum side panels complete the look.

MFix Workshop’s task was to turn this Triumph Street Twin into a true reflection of the client’s vision. Beyond the Rastafari-inspired design, the owner, who is a fan of the classic Yamaha SR400, wanted special engine badges that pay homage to it. These badges read ‘SR900’ and ‘SR400/500,’ referencing the Street Twin’s 900 cc engine. The lime green Acerbis heat shield attached to the robust two-into-one Zard exhaust system was another client-specified detail.

Unique Story of Migingo Island: Disputed Territory in Lake Victoria

Migingo Island, situated in Africa, holds a unique and intriguing status. It is located on the eastern side of Lake Victoria and is known for its astonishingly small size, even smaller than a football field. Surprisingly, despite its diminutive dimensions, the island is home to a significant population.

The island finds itself at the center of a dispute between Uganda and Kenya, both nations asserting their claims over it. This tiny piece of land, surrounded by water, has become a focal point of contention.

Migingo Island can be described as one of the most densely populated islands globally, with over 100 people residing in just two thousand square meters of space. Approximately 500 people call this island their home, and their primary occupation is fishing.

The majority of the island’s fishermen do not own their own boats, and their income from fishing is meager. As a result, many of them lead challenging lives, residing in makeshift slums that they constructed on the island back in 2004.

Remarkably, there is only a single mobile phone charging shop on the island, where some salon services are also offered. Basic healthcare services have been established to address minor ailments, including malaria. Additionally, there are casino locations on the island.

The reason behind the dispute over ownership of Migingo Island lies in the fact that it takes around two hours to reach the island from Kenya. Kenyan residents of the island have petitioned their government to seek ownership through the International Court of Justice. Despite the sizable population, the island has only three toilets to serve hundreds of people.

Interestingly, there are brothels on the island, providing entertainment for the fishermen. Unfortunately, Migingo Island is marred by heaps of garbage and waste encircling its entirety. The prevalence of harmful insects is also a significant issue, contributing to health problems, including the spread of diseases like AIDS and malaria.

For those who hold Kenyan nationality on the island, they are permitted to return home once a week. Starting in 2004, Uganda began deploying armed forces to the island and collecting taxes under the guise of protecting the fishermen.

In response, Kenya dispatched naval personnel to the island. The lack of effective law and order enforcement between the islands has led to numerous complaints from fishermen about the actions of law enforcement officers from both countries.
