Google Messages Now Displays Stunning Ultra HDR Images

Google Messages has joined the league of apps supporting Ultra HDR, a revolutionary image format in Android 14. This format enhances photography by embedding an HDR gain map in the metadata of images, resulting in vibrant colors and increased contrast when viewed on compatible devices. While Google Chrome and Google Photos had already incorporated Ultra HDR support, Google Messages quietly joined the list in September 2023, just before the Pixel 8 series launch.

Sharing Ultra HDR images via Google Messages using RCS ensures that the HDR gain map is retained, providing recipients with a visually enhanced photo experience on compatible devices. Despite lacking a distinct icon or text to identify Ultra HDR images, opening them on devices like the Pixel 8 series triggers the automatic application of the HDR gain map, bringing out richer colors and highlights.

Although some social media platforms may compress or remove Ultra HDR metadata, Google Messages preserves the gain map, allowing backed-up images to retain their enhanced quality in Google Photos. It’s important to note that Google Photos currently doesn’t support editing Ultra HDR pictures without losing metadata. For editing while retaining metadata, users can turn to Adobe Lightroom.

Presently, only the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro support capturing 10-bit Ultra HDR photos, while viewing capabilities extend to the Pixel 7 series and newer models. As more Android flagship phones enter the market, the list of supported devices is expected to grow in the coming months.

In the images, we see a flagship phone with a flat back panel and a completely flat screen – a pleasant surprise for S Pen users. Samsung seems to have ditched the curved edges, enhancing the overall user experience.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra marks an evolutionary step forward. Similar to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, this upcoming model features individual camera cutouts on the back panel and a square design. The metal frame of the Galaxy S24 Ultra has slightly rounded edges, while the top and bottom edges are flat. On the right edge, you’ll find the power button, volume key, and an antenna.

According to recent reports, Samsung plans to unveil the Galaxy S24 series on January 17 at an Unpacked event in San Hose, California. Nubia is getting ready to launch two new phones in China powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Red Magic 9 Pro series, featuring this new chip, is set to be released later this week, while the Z60 Ultra is expected to debut in December. In a recent leak, tipster Digital Chat Station revealed some camera features and reiterated the expected launch timeframe for the ZTE Z60 Ultra.

According to Digital Chat Station, the upcoming Nubia Z60 Ultra is rumored to include an under-display front camera and a 35mm camera. Notably, even the ultra-wide-angle camera has been upgraded to the top configuration, with sensor specifications considered the largest in the industry. It is also said to support optical image stabilization (OIS).

The tipster added that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered flagship will be unveiled in December. In a newer Weibo post, the tipster shared an image that he had already released back in August. He said that the prototype device shown on the right, which appears to be the Z60 Ultra, has a very prominent protrusion.

In August, the tipster claimed that the device is equipped with a 1-inch Sony IMX989 35mm primary camera. However, the tipster has mentioned that Nubia has not yet incorporated the IMX989 35mm sensor in the Z60 Ultra. Hence, it is unclear which primary camera will be available on the device.

The detailed specifications of the Z60 Ultra haven’t been leaked yet, but a recent Geekbench listing revealed that it will arrive with 12 GB RAM and Android 14. In terms of market positioning, it is set to rival the likes of the Xiaomi 14 Pro, iQOO 12 Pro, Vivo X100 Pro, OnePlus 12, Realme GT 5 Pro, Meizu 21 series, Oppo Find X7 Pro, and Honor Magic 6 Pro in the Chinese market. Camo Cool: Exploring the Features of Atomos Ninja and Ninja Ultra Monitors

Atomos has just revealed its latest generation of monitor/recorders, the Ninja and Ninja Ultra. This marks a significant update since the original Ninja’s debut in 2010. Back then, having a monitor/recorder that could capture ProRes to a removable SSD was groundbreaking for DSLR shooters.

Although many cameras can now internally record in 4:2:2 10-bit and decent codecs, there remains a demand for external recorders/monitors, especially among mirrorless hybrids and budget digital cinema cameras lacking internal RAW recording capability.

The new Ninja and Ninja Ultra sport a distinctive ‘camo’ color polycarbonate body. They both offer 6K ProRes RAW, ProRes, DNxHD, and H.265 codecs. Notably, H.265 was formerly a paid option, but it’s now included. Oddly, there’s only a camo color option, and regular black isn’t available.

Despite the same screen and body design as their predecessors, the real changes are under the hood. The new Ninja targets mirrorless hybrid owners, while the Ninja Ultra focuses on optimizing camera-to-cloud tech and Atomos Connect workflows.
