The Mystery of Argentina’s Rotating Island in the Paraná River

November 28, 20231 Min Read

The Paraná River flows through Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, making it the second longest river in South America. In the river’s delta in Argentina, there is a peculiar circular island with a diameter of 120 meters.

Rotating Island

Floating islands are found in various parts of the world, including Finland, Turkey, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Bolivia, Peru, and India. However, the circular island in Argentina stands out due to its unusual shape, and it is known for constantly undergoing rotation.

This unique island is home to essential aquatic plants, and at one end of the swamp, tree roots grow. Despite the presence of vegetation, the islands in the lake are sometimes affected by severe storms and strong winds along the coast.

Argentinian film director Sergio Neuspiller, in search of a perfect delta for his film, discovered this extraordinary location. Originally planning to film supernatural phenomena, he was unaware of the island’s constant rotation. After spending time at the site, he observed the island undergoing a continuous revolution.

The mystery surrounding this rotating island became evident through images captured by Google satellites on different days. In 2003, the island was part of the Paraná Delta, and the enigma started in 2016.
