From India to Italy: Bogra Welcomes Filmmakers for International Film Festival

The International Film Festival has started from today in Bogra, the capital of North Bengal. It Will continue till February 17. This festival titled ‘Bogra International Film Festival 2024’ has been organized for the fourth time by Pundranagar Film Sangsad, an organization of film lovers of the district. It is said that 30 filmmakers and crew from four countries including India, Nepal, Italy, Bangladesh are participating in this event.

In the meantime, it is said that the logo of the festival and the cover of the publication have been unveiled. Films from 18 countries will be screened at this year’s festival. Everyone will get a chance to watch a total of 45 films from these countries. The films shown at the festival can be divided into three categories. First case is full length film, second case is short film and lastly documentary film.

The best film awards will be given in four categories. There are six narrative feature films, seven short documentaries and 32 short films competing. Stars from Asian and European countries will participate as judges in this festival.

Dharmender Dangi from India, Dr. Abid, KP Pathak from Nepal, Rodney Rathipana from Sri Lanka, Indo Starz from Germany and Ashraf Shishir and Sadia Khalid Riti from Bangladesh will be the judges of the festival. Nepali filmmaker Arun Deo Josi will train in a filmmaking workshop at Zilla Arts Academy at 3 p.m. After the official opening at 5 pm, the first day’s film screening will continue till 9 pm.

Pundra University Vice-Chancellor Professor Chittaranjan Mishra inaugurated the festival at Bogra District Art Academy at 5 pm. The organizing committee said in a notification that 30 filmmakers and crew from India, Nepal, Italy and Bangladesh have come to Bogra to participate in the festival. The festival will screen 45 short, documentary and feature films from 18 countries. The best films will be awarded in four categories from these films.

Hollywood keeps making lots of movies about drugs and addiction

At the Sundance Film Festival in January, I saw many movies about drugs and alcohol. They were everywhere—comedies, dramas, horror films, and biopics—all filled with stories about dealers, addicts, and different kinds of drugs like pills, marijuana, meth, and cocaine.

The movies were so depressing that by the end of the week, I felt overwhelmed. It seemed like the Sundance Film Festival had become all about drugs.

It’s true that drug abuse is a big problem in America, but flooding the movies with stories about drugs isn’t going to bring more people to the theaters. Some of the films were good, but many were bad. Watching so many of them together wasn’t a good experience.

You might think that this trend was just a one-time thing at the Sundance Festival, which is known for showing edgy independent films. But the festival is still important in the movie world, and it often shows what filmmakers care about. Some years, the festival focuses on true stories or heartwarming films, but in 2023, drugs were a big theme.

One movie, “Little Death,” showed David Schwimmer as a TV writer who struggles with pills. Another, “The Outrun,” had Saoirse Ronan playing an alcoholic in London. Even a romance film called “My Old Ass” had a scene where a young woman takes mushrooms and sees her future self.

By the end of the festival, I was hoping for something more uplifting, but I didn’t find it. The last movie I watched, “Rob Peace,” was about a black teenager from New Jersey who goes to Yale but ends up selling drugs and getting killed. It felt like every movie was about drugs, and it was depressing to watch. These movies might try to be brave or risky, but after seeing so many of them, they just seemed lazy.

Positive Signs Ahead for Hollywood Movie Releases, According to Cineplex CEO

Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob is optimistic about the supply of Hollywood movies improving in 2024. He believes that there will be enough films reaching theaters this year and next to alleviate the film supply issues that arose following the end of the dual writers and actors strikes.

Jacob noted positive signs such as Disney’s announcement of Moana 2 for a theatrical release on November 27 and the upcoming release of Dev Patel’s action thriller Monkey Man. These developments are seen as good news for the exhibition sector, according to Jacob.

He anticipates Hollywood’s production schedule returning to normal throughout 2024 and into the following year. Looking ahead to the last quarter of the year, Jacob highlighted several titles, including Joker: Folie à Deux, Gladiator 2, Moana 2, Lord of the Rings, another Karate Kid movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which are expected to drive box office recovery.

This marks a significant change from 2023, when Cineplex relied on fewer Hollywood releases, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Aquaman 2, to drive box office sales. Jacob sees March as a crucial month, with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 serving as a major test for exhibitors.

To compensate for short-term supply challenges from Hollywood, Cineplex is also looking to international film titles. Despite challenges, the exhibitor saw overall revenues rise by 1.7 percent to $315 million during the fourth quarter, with theater attendance increasing by 4.2 percent to 9.59 million patrons.

Top-performing Hollywood titles during the latest quarter included Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. However, box office revenues for the fourth quarter were only 68 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, resulting in a net loss of $9 million for Cineplex during the latest financial quarter.

Key metrics also showed a slight decrease in box office revenue per patron but an increase in concession revenue per patron compared to the same period in 2022. Despite ongoing challenges, Jacob remains hopeful about the future of the exhibition industry and the return of Hollywood movies to theaters.
