Bangladesh cricket T20 World Cup participation is in doubt after reports that the ICC has issued a final deadline. The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on February 7.
According to multiple reports, Bangladesh must confirm its participation by January 21 or risk being removed from the tournament.
The International Cricket Council has reportedly asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board to confirm whether the national team will travel to India for the T20 World Cup. The request follows Bangladesh’s refusal to play its matches in India.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has cited security concerns and formally requested that its matches be moved to co-host Sri Lanka. Discussions between ICC officials and BCB representatives were held in Dhaka over the weekend.
No agreement was reached during those meetings. In an official statement, the BCB said it repeated its request for relocation and explored alternative scheduling options.
The ICC has not released a public statement on the matter. However, Reuters and AFP reported that Bangladesh has been given a Wednesday deadline to clarify its position.
ICC sources told international media that if Bangladesh does not confirm participation, Scotland could be included as a replacement. Scotland is currently the highest-ranked team not already qualified for the tournament.
Bangladesh has been drawn in Group C and is scheduled to face England in the group stage. All of Bangladesh’s matches are currently set to be played in Kolkata and Mumbai.
One proposal discussed involved a possible group swap with Ireland. Ireland’s group-stage matches are scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka, which could reduce logistical challenges.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed that moving Bangladesh to another group was discussed as a possible solution. The board said the goal was to resolve the issue with minimal disruption to the tournament schedule.
Under a separate ICC arrangement, Pakistan will play all of its matches in Colombo. That agreement was reached earlier to address similar venue concerns involving India.
The disagreement escalated earlier this month after the Indian cricket board advised an IPL franchise to drop Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. The decision triggered strong reactions within Bangladesh cricket circles.
Cricket analysts say removing a full ICC member at this stage would be highly unusual. However, ICC regulations allow for replacement if a team withdraws or fails to meet participation requirements.
The situation has created uncertainty for fans, broadcasters, and organizers. A final decision is expected shortly after the January 21 deadline.
