Spain Opens Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

On March 20, 2025, Spain’s government launched a new digital nomad visa. It lets non-EU remote workers live and work in Spain for up to one year. The visa is renewable for up to five years. Officials say it’s designed to attract skilled professionals who spend money locally but don’t compete for local jobs.

Who Qualifies

Applicants must prove they work remotely for a company outside Spain. They need a minimum monthly income of around €2,000. Requirements also include valid health insurance and a clean criminal record. No employer sponsorship is needed. The visa is open to citizens of countries outside the European Union.

Why Spain Now

Spain is the latest European country to offer a dedicated visa for digital nomads. The goal is to boost local economies, especially in less touristy regions. According to the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, the program targets 10,000 new residents in its first year. Cities like Valencia and Malaga are expected to see the most interest. The visa also provides a path to permanent residency after five years of continuous legal stay.

The application process opened on the launch date. Early reports indicate strong demand from professionals in the US, Canada, and Latin America. The government has set up a dedicated online portal for applications. Officials say the streamlined process should take about 20 days for approval.

This move is part of a broader trend. Over 40 countries now have some form of digital nomad visa. Spain hopes its combination of culture, climate, and connectivity will set it apart. The program is a concrete example of how borders are adapting to remote work.
